Emigration from Friuli Venezia Giulia to Switzerland
Furio Bednarz

Emigration from Friuli dates back a long way, from the end of the 16th century with the temporary migrations to neighbouring countries and to countries further away, in Central Europe. As a massive phenomenon it began around the middle of the 19th century, and from that moment on, Switzerland became an interesting destination for Friulian emigrants, playing an important role in the migratory wave after the Second World War.

Then in the 1970s and 80s, the migratory flow reversed and people returning from Switzerland significantly contributed to the economic upswing of the region. Some Friulians, however, decided to settle abroad where they became integrated, achieving a certain standing both socially and professionally. According to the latest data from AIRE (Anagrafe degli italiani all’Estero - the Register of Italians living abroad), the Friulians living in Switzerland in a stable and organized community are now over 15,000. They keep up contact with their homeland, which at the beginning of the new millennium has become the destination of thousands of workers from Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean basin.
