Emigration from Friuli dates back a long way, from the end of the 16th century with the temporary migrations to neighbouring countries and to countries further away, in Central Europe. As a massive phenomenon it began around the middle of the 19th century, and from that moment on, Switzerland became an interesting destination for Friulian emigrants, playing an important role in the migratory wave after the Second World War.
